Jennifer & Angela's dad-continue praying for healing and recovery from lung surgery

Jason & Ashley-Jason is having a skin cancer removed on his face on Monday. This is the second since April. Ashley is having an outpatient surgery on Thursday.

Emily-uncle passed away suddenly, aunt, & cousins need prayer. School for me to be organized and have endurance.

Krista-continue to pray for recovery

Anne-My dad had double knee replacement surgery, and his recovery is going slower than hoped.

Derok-Pray for my family. I am a full time student. Pray for my strenght and focus to complete school.

Scott & Lisa-praise that we were able to have the doctor call in a prescription and get free antibiotics for our 3 year old while we do not have insurance.

Scott & Lisa-some friends are beginning a life of mission work, Scott--still waiting to hear back from a job opportunity.

Stephanie-dealing with strong anxiety at night. Not sure why. Peace of mind needed.
Clista-mom is having surgery (follow up to breast cancer, 3 yrs ago)

Parent's Night Out/Class Christmas Party- This Friday 12/9/11-Drop your Preschoolers and siblings (thru 4th grade) off at the church at 6pm and then head out to Stephanie's house by about 6:15 for our class Christmas party. Don't forget you have to pick up your kids by 8:30 or you all turn into pumpkins! Well, ok, maybe not really but you don't want to find out what happens if you are late picking up your kids. ;)

Jennifer-neighbor collapsed in yard. William is in the hospital on a ventilator and no update on his condition.

We had 86 people at the Akridge farm to enjoy the fun at the hayride, the most we've ever had! What a great day and fun we all had, but we did miss all of you who couldn't make it. By the way Mike and Brenda found a camp chair, football & frisbee left for someone to claim.

Vesla: PRAISE! Her grandmother is continuing to do well. God really showed presence this week in the Lochte house. Pray for sister, Heidi, her husband gave her the D word. Said she needs to put him first above 3 kids, 2 year old daughter and 6 mos old twin boys, and he is out of town a lot.

Christy Chambers: Pray for the Englebert family. ( My aunt Faye passed away).

Emily: Pray for changers in her life. Going back to school to renew teacher certificate.

Ashley Lybrand: Pray for sister, Lesley, for mersa staff infection to be completely gone now that the pic line is out.

Whitworth: Clista and her leg cramps to go away. Caitlyn to be happy while in full leg cast.

Lisa-praise- the biopsy was negative--no Lyme disease. I will just need to take antibiotic for 21 days to keep infection away.

Announcements:

--Lochte's--Praise Vesla's G-ma did very well last week. Prayer-family friend going through very ugly divorce with children ages 5 and 13 being used by father to hurt mother.
--Elizabeth-dealing with mental walls. Praying for the right professional help with bringing them down.

--Jason & Susan- Jason's mom began new treatment this week. She will receive injection twice a week. Lab work has shown some improvement in the last month.
--Lisa-lab work done on insect bite associated with Lyme's Disease. Will be taking an antibiotic for 21 days. Praying for no long term illness.

-Sunday is gonna be a big day. We are having an attendance challenge in Sunday School so be sure to come. We are shooting for 2011 churchwide. We will be starting our study of the book of Jeremiah. It will also be kids' promotion day in Sunday School which means they will be moving up to their new age group class since school is starting back. Also, the contemporary worship will be meeting in the main worship and will be led by Charlie Hall! You don't want to miss this. Big day!

--Help out the Missions ministry by bringing dark colored yarn to the mission wall in the Gathering Space.

--Trussville Firefighter's faily-Jarrod Stathers
--Drew Rush and Chip Ramsey's family in their loss of a great man. Continue to pray for Drew and his coworkers.
--Christy Chambers-continued prayer for FBC, Irondale and daycare closing Aug. 12th., unspoken.
--Andrea Anderson--PRAISE! Aunt Petretia's bone marrow test are cancer free. She got to come home this past Saturday. Please pray for Greg as he starts back to school this week.
--Vesla-PRAISE!-we have been able to talk to chad everyday via skype. Prayers for us to continue to have strength especially Logan who is really struggling with Chad being gone.
--Brady-Grandmother with cancer is home. Pray she is comfortable during her remaining time. --other Grandmother is possibly showing signs of dementia or paranoia. Hard on his parents.
--Jason & Susan--Jason's mom has rare condition effecting her kidneys. Will be seeing a specialist this Tuesday to discuss further treatment. --Grover Smith-This is the father of a close friend, he is very gravely ill. He and their family need prayers for comfort, peace, and understanding. --Katie Davidson--18 yr ld Hewitt graduate who had a golf cart accitdent in front of our house this week. She is in a coma at UAB with severe head trauma. Pray for her, her family, the other girls driving/riding the cart, as well as, our neighbors who were the first responders.
--Scott-continued prayer for job situation. Lisa--possible skin cancer on back. Will have an appointment this Wednesday.
--Mike-as he nears his surgery on August 18th.

We began the video study series of "Have a New Kid By Friday" by Kevin Leman. According to Brenda several of us were out of town but the discussion after the video on parenting yesterday was so good that it will be continued at the beginning of class next Sunday. We plan to view the next video but may not have time for discussion of it. So if you were out of class, please come this coming Sunday and get caught up quickly.

******Happy Mother's Day to all!******

Brenda shared a quote that could sum up Sunday's lesson:
Jesus Christ is absolutely necessary but absolutely enough!

Colossians 2:8-23 reminds us that there is nothing we can or need to do to earn our salvation. It is only because of what Jesus has done for us that we can stand before God. The reality we have in Christ is that He has connected us to the Father in a spirtual union that only He can hold. And we can rest assured that if He is the holder there is nothing that can separate us!

We must be careful to not let any deceptive philosophy take us captive. In this day and age there are so many thoughts and teachings that sound good, but salvation comes only through the one and true Jesus. We can come to know Him through His word, the Bible. He has given us the treasure of Scripture as life-giving words. Do we treasure these words as "life" or do we see them as a rule book?

It was a very somber place in Sunday School this morning as everyone was swapping stories about the tornado and the path of destruction it left behind. It was hard to go on with business as usual. Everyone was either directly effected or knew someone that had been. Many of our own class members were still without power, or morning for the loss of property of loved ones. To my knowledge no immediate family members of our class were lost during the storms, but countless friends or co-workers, or releatives were directly hit or injured. We of course will pray for these families for months to come. You can contact the church website or church office for countless opportunities to help during this time.

Business as usual---should we ever really live our lives like business as usual. Our lesson was entitled Keep on Keeping On. Our faith urges and demands that we keep on in the faith. But our faith must never simply be business as usual. We must continue to work out our salvation. Brenda wrote a quote on the board-- "The faith that fizzles before the finish was flawed from the first." If you find yourself fizzling or wavering, be sure to examine your faith. Look to God above and trust in Him. Colossians 2:6 says, "So then just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him." How did you recieve Christ? by grace through faith. How do we continue to live in Him? by grace through faith. That faith grows and develops and maybe doubts and struggles but never shall we turn completely from it. There may be times, incredibly difficult times of wavering but God's grace will reign victorius and if we listen, we will hear His voice calling us back to Him. Thank you God for being faithful to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness if we confess and repent our sins!

The Empty Tomb

1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

Update from Brenda

Based on our consult with the surgeon yesterday, Mike says he is "98%" sure he will opt for the robotic surgery. Dr. Tully was easy to talk with and answered all our questions. We are blessed to have him in B'ham! Once Mike chooses to make the phone call, it will take 4-6 weeks to get on the surgical docket.
So, pray for God's timing of the surgery, assuming that is what Mike decides. The option of surgery first gives him more options should the cancer ever recur. Since this is a slow growing type of cancer, we do not feel rushed to do anything, but at the same time, want it taken care of.

On another note, pray for Jim, my brother-in-law, who will get back results today from tests run yesterday to see the latest status of his renal cancer that jumped to his lung. Jim is very tired from 10 consecutive rounds of treatment and is dealing with serious mouth sores from the drugs. We are praying for total healing for his body this side of heaven, if God sees fit.

Lesson Recap:

We enjoyed a special treat with a monologue given by "Paul," the disciple also known as Tommy Coshat. Tommy did a great job reciting the entire book of Phillipians while dressed in Biblical clothing and chains. It was a wonderful picture of Paul as he addressed the believers at Phillipi and a great encouragement to us today to hide God's word in our heart!

A key thought from our lesson could be Know God - Know peace vs. No God - No peace. Isaiah 26:3 says God will keep those in perfect peace whose mind is fixed on Him. God is faithful to provide all of our needs we just have to remember that "what I don't acpquire, I don't require." True contentment comes not from the things we own but WHO we know. God is the source of true contentment and Paul lived knowing that full well. Paul said that he had learned the secret of being content and that he could do everything through Christ who gives him strength. He wrote those words to the Philippians from a jail cell. Contentment is living with a sense of sufficiency no matter what the circumstances. Wrong thinking leads to wrong feelings. And wrong feelings can lead to wrong behavior.

Brenda shared that while her kids were growing up they used a "4:8" test on things. Philippians 4:8 says, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things." Do your thoughts pass the 4:8 test. If you are struggling knowing if something is right just 4:8 it! We must guard our hearts and MINDS against wrong thinking.

Lesson Recap: God Works In - We Work Out - Philippians 2:12-30

So you've become a Christian....now what? Paul says continue to work out your salvation. Saving grace is instantaneous, but the sanctification process is lifelong. We give control of our lives to God and He gives us His energy to grow in Him. There is nothing we can do to earn our place in Heaven. Jesus takes care of that, but we must continue to surrender our lives and choose His path this side of Heaven. We can do that partly by following Paul's example, as well as, Timothy and Epaphroditus as discussed in this chapter of Philippians.

Paul said we should do everything without complaining or arguing. Boy is that a behavior check? This world is crooked and depraved and has been even since Biblical times, but we are to exemplify what it means to be children of God nevertheless. Paul demonstrates that salvation worked out in our lives would effect our behavior, our beliefs, and our disposition.

Timothy's example showed genuine concern for others. We are to "shine like stars in the universe." One way we can do this is to not just be concerned with ourselves but to seek out others needs and show concern for them.

Epaphroditus's example perhaps might be the most challenging of all. He came close to death for the work of Christ. He loved the Philippians to the point of he was more concerned that they were so worried about his illness. He did not quit serving in his illness. He showed the epitome of selflessness.

As we hold up the mirror in our own lives I pray we will be challenged to not be the same but to live out this new nature that God has given us.

Paul is encouraging and tell them how to be unified and of one mind.
Since they have the common ground, there is encouragement, love, affection for one another, and empathy/sympathy with and for one another.
In humility think of others more significant than yourself.
Don't think less of yourself but put others needs ahead of your won
We see the ultimate example of humility when Jesus stepped down from Heaven to offer himself for us.
Jesus obeyed by his death on the cross.
Think about what it was like for Jesus to give up Heaven to come to earth. Remember that He was full God and fully human/man at the same time.
Jesus willingly took on human form so he knows how to intercede for us...yet he was without sin.
And he also willingly died on the cross for each of us.
One day all will bow down and confess that he is Lord.

In closing...

Jesus is the ultimate example as one who came to serve, not to be served.
How does obedience characterize your life?
If you know him as Savior and Lord what is the sacrifice and "cost" to you as a Christian.

Focusing on the God of our circumstances instead of our circumstances
Paul was miles away from the Philippian believers but they were always on his mind and in his heart.
It's the Christian love that us us apart.
Paul prays for their love to abound and grow, to be discerning in their love, and to be pure and blameless, filled with the fruit of righteousness.
Remember that Paul is chained in a Roman prison. Doors were opened as he is a prisoner because of the four guards that see and hear him during the day.
Paul is being tried because of his religious belief and so the "religious leaders" have to study (another opportunity to share the gospel) to see if there is any validity to his beliefs.
Other believers are being encouraged because of Paul
Paul just wants the gospel to be spread...there is no selfish motive.
There IS power in the gospel
Paul would rather die to be with Jesus but he knows that God has a purpose.
Paul charged them to be unified and to defend the faith - it's the set of beliefs that make Christianity.
Be consistent in your walk, as children of God and walk in a way worthy of the Gospel.
God has granted to us and given to us the priviledge of suffering for Christ - there is purpose behind our suffering.

Lesson Recap: 2 Kings 18-19

Hope=confident trust in God

These chapters give us a look at the account of Hezekiah's reign as king. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord unlike so many kings before him. The foe is King Sennacharib (Mike really enjoyed saying his name.) Sennacharib trys to set Hezekiah up as the one deceiving the people. But God is on Hezekiah's side and shows them all who is boss. (my paraphrase...lol) In a time where Hezekiah's very reputation and belief system are coming into question he doesn't lose hope, he turns to God in prayer. This is the only adequate response. He didn't try to take things into his own hands, he put them in the hands of the One that could truly provide. His prayer shows that he knows God as the one true God, that he believes God is able and that He has the power to provide the salvation they need for the moment. The beauty of the close of the prayer is that he prays all of this to give God the glory so that all kingdoms may know Him.

God does answer Hezekiah's prayer and shows up on the battle field as the angel of the Lord and slays 185,000 men. Hezekiah's men never even had to strike a sword. Sennacharib was taken care of as well, as he fled back to Ninevah and then was killed by 2 of his own sons.

Mike reminded us that It's one thing when a king speaks or a president, etc.....its another when the Lord speaks. We can always have hope, no matter how bleak things are because we know the ending is in God's hands.

Questions of application-

What is your biggest battle in your life?
Where is your hope? confidence? trust?
Do you even have hope?
Do you expect God to show up?

God knows our battle. We need to turn to Him in prayer. We can claim a promise in Scripture and not be afraid. Fear says I do not trust God.

If you are having trouble in turning to God for something going on in your life right now, do not try to go it alone. We want to help. Turn to someone in our class, or to Mike and Brenda. God is able to carry you through whatever you are facing.

Children's Harbor Social-Saturday night

As a class we wanted to do something to help instill in our children the priority of helping others. Our Ministry coordinator Emily introduced us to Children's Harbor. We needed something that we could do together with our kids so we decided to pack hygiene kits to be provided to the families who were staying in the facilities overnight. Our kids made Get Well cards and helped pack the items in bags. We made a total of 89 complete bags and had a variety of miscellaneous items to contribute to future kits.

Israel thought they could sin secretly and get away with it.--Are we deceiving ourselves in thinking we can hide our sin from God?
They knew God's laws--God had sent His prophets and they ignored them. --Are we ignoring God's word?
They became worthless like the idols they worshipped--Are we worshipping worthless idols?
Are we becoming immune to God's warning?
What is it in our lives that would cause anger in God's eyes?
How has God spoken warnings to us?
What has been our response to those warnings?

The only appropriate response is Repentance--to make an about face! When we make that about face we will be staring into the face of God. When we turn from our sin God will lead our paths straight. God is full of grace, turn to Him today!

Lesson Recap:

(2 Kings 9-10)--Today was an amazing lesson on our passion in Christ. Simply put, are we where we need to be or where we could be in our relationship with Christ? If not, why not? Mike and Brenda gave us a strong challenge to adjust our lives so that they will line up with where God wants us. The world has one standard, but God's is a far cry from the world. By which standard are we living our lives? Do we think we are ok, because we have cleaned up our act by the things we say, or the fact that our name is on a church roll, or perhaps because we volunteer left and right? Is that really all God desires of us? Let's not be satisfied with where we are simply because we measure up to the status quo of the church. Let's give every aspect of our lives to God. In Revelation, the writer notes that God would rather us be hot or cold but if we are lukewarm he wants to vomit us out of his mouth. How would you rate your passion, your love, your zeal for God? God's love can reach into every area of our hearts and lives. It is powerful enough to transform the coldest heart. And its power continues to drive the strongest to reach for more. It is full of amazing grace. God so desires us to live in a love relationship with Him. His love for us is reason enough to respond with our lives in worship!

We are starting a new study in our Tuesday Morning Men’s Group. The study is called The Man God Uses by Henry and Tom Blackaby. It is a seven week book/dvd study. We will meet each Tuesday morning at 6:00 am in CLC room 203. We are out between 7:00 and 7:15 depending on when you need to get to work. Our first week will be Tuesday, February 8th. We will meet at 6:00 am at Cracker Barrel this Tuesday (February 1st) to have a fellowship breakfast before we get started. Please let Brian Sewell know if you are interested in the study.

We had a great morning studying 2 Kings 5 with several new couples visiting with us. We welcome you to the class! We hope you felt at home and will join us again soon!

Things must be going fairly well for the majority of the class because we didn't have any recorded prayer requests for the blog. (Some were mentioned in class and we will continue to be praying for those.) We did however have a praise for Brenda's brother-in-law Jim. He is doing somewhat better. Please continue to pray for him and his treatments for cancer.

Announcements:

Don't forget to be collecting travel size hygiene products. We will be putting kits together to take to Children's Harbor in February. We have decided to make a party out of it on February 19th from 5:30-8:00pm with our kids. Chili will be served in the Blythe Equipping Room at the church as we put the kits together and help our kids understand the importance of this facility and how we are able to contribute to those in need. A list of items for the kits can be found on the sidebar of this blog. A sign up for food items and such to bring to the party will be passed around in class soon.
Vesla's delivery date has been "bumped" up (pun intended) to Feb. 1st.--a sign up for meals will be set up on Takethemameal.com soon after she comes home.

Lesson Recap: (Responding to God's Word) 2 Kings 22, 23

We had a great crowd in Sunday School so instead of retelling the lesson, I want to simply list some of the questions that stood out in my mind. Maybe they will impact you too.

What were you like as an 8 year old? Could you have been a king that did what was right in the sight of the Lord and reign for 31 years like Josiah did?
How are you preparing your own children to walk in the ways of the Lord and not turn aside to the right or to the left?
When our children grow up will they remember our generation as one who walked with the Lord and be able to follow our example?
Is God's word evident in our church and in our life? or is it hiding and needing to be found?
What idols in our life need to be torn down? in our family traditions? in our church? Do we want God's anger to burn against us?

"Josiah desecrated the high places.....He broke down the shrines...he pulled down the altars....he smashed the sacred stones....got rid of the mediums and spiritists, the household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things in Judah and Jerusalem." --2 Kings 23:8, 12, 14, 24

Read this chapter and you will see that Josiah was violent. Are we violent enough when it comes to fighting against our idols - our temptations? We must not be passive, but must fight against every form of evil with God's strength and weapons.

Last question: What was the key weapon that turned their world upside down in these chapters? Answer: The reading of God's word.

Sewell Family--Cade's recovery went well, so far so god. -Pray for adoption as we get close to being matched with our future daughter.
Julie C.- grandmother is hospitalized and being evaluated about going to nursing home.

We had to adjust the time due to the coming snowstorm and we finished just in time. Many of us on our drive home were just ahead of the sleet and snow showers. The Foolish Wise Man-1 Kings 11:1-13, James 1:22, 1:8

"God's Blessings are given by grace, but are enjoyed by obedience" --Warren Wiersbe

I. Solomon disobeyed God's Word (vv1-8)

II. Solomon ignored God's warning (VV9-13)

Solomon began his reign with great wisdom and devotion to God. Somewhere along the way he drifted. By the end of his life, his legacy of greatness was tarnished by the fact that "his heart had turned away from the Lord." (v11:9) There were many factors that led to his turning away. Perhaps it was because he intermarried with the foreign women and took 700 wives and 300 concubines. Perhabps it was because of his pride. Perhaps it was the pressures of being that powerful and that wealthy. Whatever the circumstances, Scripture says v9-"The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart turned away from the Lord."

Our obedience is ultimately a heart issue. We must guard our hearts and keep them focused on God and his ways. God does not want 90% of us. He wants all of us.

Questions to ponder this week:

What causes us to start drifting?
Do we listen and recognize God's warning?
Why did God warn Solomon not to intermarry?
How do we allow ourselves to be influenced by the world?
How do I allow myself to love the world more than God?
What kind of legacy are we leaving? and living?
What helps us get back on track if we stray.

I pray this week is one of reflection and joy for you and your family as we celebrate the most beautiful birth of our Savior and Lord.

Thanks to Amy White for a yummy Breakfast bread...here's the much requested recipe:
2 pkgs crescent rolls
2 pkgs 8 oz. cream cheese
3/4 cup of sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. cinnamon mixed with 1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup nuts
Put 1 pkg. crescent rolls rolled out flat in a greased 9x13 cake pan. Mix yoke of egg with 3/4 cup sugar, 2 pkgs. of cream cheese, and 1 tsp. of vanilla, and spread on top of the crescent rolls. Put other pkg. of crescent rolls on top. Brush the egg white on top of the rolls. Mix 1/4 cup sugar, nuts, and cinnamon and sprinkle on top. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

We were also very excited to see Kylie as the very first class member to arrive in Sunday School! I even got a picture to prove it! he, he!

Lesson Recap:

We began a new unit in the Explore the Bible Series by studying 1 Kings. The Lesson "What Money Can't Buy" was a great reminder for us, especially at Christmas time, to be wise in the things we ask from God. Our God is faithful to keep his covenents. We should be faithful and wise in those covenents(promises) we make with God or others. Have you found yourself in a difficult situation begging God for an answer and promising if He only answers then you will promise to do... Be careful in the "deals" you make. God wants our yes, to be yes and our no to be no. James 1:5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him."

Solomon was a wise man and began his rule with great promise. Somewhere along the way he drifted. Temptation is strong even to the wisest of men. It reminds me of a song that speaks of a "slow fade." Drifting from God is a process. We compromise just a little and then slowly we fade into direct disobedience. The road of righteousness is narrow. We must not allow things to draw us off the path.

A man that is good friends with my father whose daughter I went to school with just lost her litlle girl (she was just a couple weeks further along than me). She was admitted to the hospital in Montgomery and with some complications ended up having to deliver a stillborn. Her name is Emily Pugh Foucault. If you don't mind, I know she and her family would appreciate the prayers as they grieve.

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying ofr all the saints. --Ephesians 6:13-18

It is hard to imagine what war is really like until you are in the middle of it, I suppose. But it is also possible to be clueless that we are even at war. Just think about our day to day life. I don't think many if any of the people who were fighting over the $1.33 cheap towels on black Friday at Walmart had the war of the Middle East on their mind...or even the man who cut me off this morning in car line. It is possible for so many of us to not even realize that our country is at war. Even more sadly so, it is possible for us as Christians to not even realize there is a war going on right now for the souls of those around us.

Paul urges us to be prepared....to be alert...to put on our armor and get in the thick of things. There is a very real adversary that is out to steal, kill and destroy. But we have an amazing ally that has already won the war. We must continue to get dirty in the battle as we struggle face to face with our enemy, but we don't need to struggle unprepared or in vain. We must put on the full armor of God.

Re-read the scripture this week and be prepared for battle! Ephesians 6:10-24; 1 Peter 5:8-9

Kelly Moates-Juanita Dorr (Mam-Maw). She fell and is having hip replacement surgery at St. Vincent's. She is 90, but active and very together mentally! She still lives on her own as well. Supposedly, the orthopedic surgeon has done work on Mark Ingram & Julio Jones...so I assume he has some good skills! Pray for wisdom for Dr. Cain. Pray also for the surgery, her recovery, and my parents as they assist her in her needs in the weeks & months to come

Brenda-Jim (B-I-L) to be able to take his treatment on Tuesday. This could be the first time he could take the 3rd round treatment. Continue to pray that the Thrush is not an issue.

We missed you Brenda! Hope you are feeling better!

As Thanksgiving draws near I can't help but notice how people approach the holidays. Some seem to be excited and ready to soak it all in, while others turn into Scrooge at the first display of decorations in the stores. I hope you and your family are able to use this time as a true time of reflection and thankfulness for the blessings in life. Don't let the hoopla of Halloween and Santa's arrival allow you to miss this time of giving thanks to our Lord. We are truly blessed. Just take a look around you. Hopefully as you begin to count your blessings you think of your spouse. We had great discussion this Sunday about God's Idea for Marriage. In a day where we are told to lookout for "number one," Ephesians reminds us to submit ourselves to one another.

I. Wives: Submit as service (Eph 5:22-24)
II. Husbands: Love as Christ Does (Eph. 5:25-30)
III. Both: Express a Complete Unity (Eph 5:31-33)

If you find yourself in a marriage where one is not fulfiling their role, the proper response is to pray for that spouse. Neither should try to take on the role of the other spouse, but rather pray that they will submit themselves to God's authority. Only the Holy Spirit can do the job of convicting and correcting. Our relationship with our spouse should never be manipulative or demanding one to live to the point of breaking the law or against God's word. Our relationship should help the world see the relationship of Christ and the Church.

11/7/10--Walk Carefully

Sunday Lesson Recap:
Christians are to live by principles that demonstrate they are careful about their behavior.
Ephesians 5:15-21, Psalm 90:12, Romans 12:1-2

God controls eternal time, I choose the opportunities. Are you looking at life as a challenge or a threat? Paul urges us to live intentionally not just tossed about as life goes by. We should approach life with a plan and not waste our opportunities.

Be wise with our time (Eph. 15-16)
Be aware of God's Will (Eph. 5:17)
Be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18-20)
Be subject to one another(Eph:21)

Making the most of every opportunity is a continual process of seeking God's will through a relationship with Him. We come to understand Him and His ways more and more through the basics of Bible Study, prayer, Godly counsel, circumstances, etc. As we come to know His ways better, we can come to understand His will generally and eventually specifically. His will in our specific circumstances will never contradict His word in Scripture. But to drown out the voices of this world, we must "be still and know that He is God." -Psalm 46:10

We should guard our actions and continually submit ourselves to the Spirit. This can be fleshed out through our speech, as we give thanks, and submitting ourselves to one another. Walking carefully is not living timidly or being a doormat. It is living in wisdom-the wisdom that God gives. It is living boldly in the confidence of who God is in our lives. As we submit to His control we open ourselves to the greatest opportunities possible.

Walk in Purity
Ephesians 5:1-14; 1 Jn 4:8, 1:5; Col 1:4-6, 2:8

Paul challenges us to be deliberate in our behavior and to be "immitators of God." His admonition to walk in love includes six characteristics our behavior should NOT be. The first three deal with our conduct and the next three with our speech. 1) We are not to have any hint of sexual immorality, 2) impurity, or 3)greed. We are also to keep our mouths pure of 1)obscenities, 2)foolish talk, or 3)coarse joking. In turn we should be full of thanksgiving.

Grace in the heart=grace in the lips

The way we lived in our former lives was darkness but now we are light. Three characteristics of living as the light are that it 1)reveals God, 2)produces fruit, 3)exposes wrong. As those living in THE Light we are not to have anything to do with fruitless deeds but rather expose them. Take warning though, exposing darkness is a serious responsibility. If we are not careful we will become the company we keep. We need to guard our hearts and expose the truth in LOVE. Paul urges us to find out what pleases the Lord. Our actions should be motivated by pleasing Him.

Some take aways:

Ask God to turn on the light in your life.

What elements in your life do you need to get rid of?

Evaluate your speech. Is there any foolish talk, coarse joking, or obscenities?

Where have we exchanged God's truth for a lie?

Does your life expose the dark around you?

Are we self-centered or pleasing God?

Brenda-Continue to pray for Jim's physical stamina and spiritual strength. He will have a test Monday to determine future procedure.
Jason--an employee of a client has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is scheduled for surgery this week then radiation for several weeks.

Paul knew they needed a reminder of what living in the real world was really about.
Paul is emphasizing the mind as what is important because that is where it all begins.
The key is that you have a personal relationship with him and then live and experience that daily with him.
John 17:17 - the truth is found in the truth of Jesus Christ.
Romans 12: 1 - 2 - the transforming process can only come through the Holy Spirit
How do we renew our minds? Read his word, prayer, submit yourself daily to Him, Be careful of what you are putting in - "garbage in, garbage out", when you take out a negative in your life you need to put in a positive.
Paul says to put off - lying (spread the truth), anger (handle it quickly), stealing (honest work, work with our own hands to share with those in need), rotten talk
a changed life = a changed heart = a changed mouth
bitterness - replace it with a forgiving spirit

At the end of each day, did you make God smile or make him sad?

What you believe determines how you behave

Paul is reminding us of our calling, to live a life worthy of it. How we live should be a reflection of who we are.
This is an obedience out of love for what he did for us on the cross.
Does your walk cost you anything?
What are some characteristics - humility, patience, gentleness
There is only one true living God.
God has given grace to each one of us as believers
God gave us, some to be prophets, evangelists, apostles, and some to be pastors/teachers. He equips each local church with what they need. These gifts come from the Holy Spirit.
We need those in our life that can "speak the truth in love" to us.
The church is all about us working together. We all need each other.
Does our daily walk match our profession of faith?
Is there someone you need to "speak the truth in love" to, with their best interests in mind?
Are you using your spiritual gifts to serve our church?

Why do we need power?

What do we need strength for?

Paul prays:

For the inner man to have spiritual strength
For A deeper experience with Jesus
That they would be enabled to understand God's great love
That they would be filled with God's fullness.

Paul prays for them to experience God's love
Paul is praying for their spiritual needs. If we handle the spiritual then all the physical will be met. God is most concerned with our spiritual needs.
Can we really have the fullness of God?
We can never fully comprehend it but we can know more each day.
We must strengthen the inner man through prayer, bible study, and worship.
God has unlimited resources.
Do I pray for spiritual strength for myself, my spouse, my friends, etc...
What evidence is there that the inner man is being strengthened?
Get on your knees before God. We will do this for eternity.

Dore' and Willie - praise that they have a contract on their house, clarity on how to proceed, praise that everyone is well.
Brenda - Jim will hopefully have 2nd round of cancer treatments this week.
Christy - Dana Johns, friend from high school, pray for her and her son Tristan. DHR is involved because Tristan's father has been abusive. Tristan has aspergers.
Julie - The Allen family in Leeds. Son, Brandon (12 years old) was hit by a car and passed away. Don't have a lot of money for hospital bills/funeral (no insurance).

What is the mystery described in verses 1 - 6? God's grace...and we are one body of people, which is revealed to us as believers.
God wants us to have an abundant and eternal life.
The secret is that we are all equal in God's sight.
God sees us all as equal, regardless of our sin and the fact that we are all in need of a Savior.
Through the church universal God is made known to the angels.
We, as the body of Christ, are reminded so that each one of us can be sharing the good news.

But now (v. 12) Jesus change things. He gave us direct access to the throne of God

We were dead...but God made us alive with Christ
We were enslaved...but God raised us up
We were under wrath...but God seated us in the Heavens

Does our generation really believe in Heaven?
We were spiritually dead and lifeless due to our sin and the sin in our lives
We all have free will which means that we all have a choice and decide whether or not to obey
"But God" signifies God's intervention in our lives
Mercy is not getting what we really deserve. Apart from Him we all deserve hell and death.
God's love for us motivates Him and He loves us in spite of what we do.
Grace is getting what we don't deserve, a free gift, not something that we earned or did to receive it.
One of the purposes of our salvation is to do Gods works. Before we were born He had a plan, a good and perfect plan, for our lives.
We've got to allow God to interrupt "our" plans and take the time to see the ways and areas where God is at work in our lives.
God gives us everything we need to carry out His plan for our lives.

Meditate on these truths

God called you to a certain, eternal hope
God prizes you as His inheritance
God's power to accomplish His purposes in your life is immeasurably great.

As you may remember, Mike and Brenda handed out the church's prayer list from Friday afternoon. They pointed out that we often and quickly pray for physical trials of believers but rarely move to a deeper level of prayer on their spiritual behalf. They challenged us to pray Ephesians 1:17 for those on our SS prayer list and for some of those on the church-wide list. Just remember the power of praying scripture, God's Words, back to him.

Prayer Requests

Brenda - pray for minimal side-effects with his cancer treatments. As of Sunday afternoon Jim's blood pressure was high, which is one of the side effects of the drugs. The Dr's. have prescribed a medication to hopefully help control it. Brenda is more concerned about their spirits right now. She described Jim as a "weary soldier" Please pray for Jim and Rebecca's ability to rely on the Lord and to pray Ephesians 1:17 for them; may their faith and love be known by those whose lives they touch.
Julie's Dad - continue to pray for him as tests are being run while he's admitted at St. Vincent's.
Julie's Sister-in-law - high risk pregnancy
Christy Chambers - continue to pray for her Nephew, Memo, with HSP PurPura
Paula and Brian - Adoption Home Study, the first visit is Monday.
Mike and Clista - Clista's surgery went very well. The Dr. was very happy and optimistic. She is still in a lot of pain and doesn't have full mobility in her right leg. She needs prayer for a full recovery.
Christy Chambers - new job isn't turning out that well. There seems to be a personality conflict . Please pray that God will resolve the conflict. If God's will is not for her to be at her current employer then pray that God will provide her with another opportunity.
Vesla Lochte - Praise for great test results on her baby but she requests prayer for her husband Chad for healing of his dislocated shoulder and that no additional damage was done when he was rear ended.

Kelly Moates-This an update on my friend from college Jennifer Cherry House and her husband Blaine and their family including Maisie (4) who has aplastic anemia. Jennifer had their third child at 37 weeks weighing in at 8lbs. 8 oz and 20 3/4" long! She is doing well. The doctors are preparing Maisie is preparation for her transplant. If all goes according to schedule, Maisie will be admitted to Children's Monday, September 13. She will do 6 days of pre-treatment medication and then day 7 will be transplant day. Then it will just be a matter of waiting for everything to "work".

Here are their specific prayer requests for the next days:
1. That Maisie stays infection free
2. That Maisie has no bleeding problems
3. That the cord blood is delivered safely and is all "viable"

Clista just came out of surgery and did great! The doctors were very positive and said that it wasn't as bad as they anticipated. It couldn't have gone better! She will be in a room at least until Friday. After Mike hears something more, he will let us know.

Here are some examples of our spiritual blessings: chosen, blessed, holy, loved, blameless, given grace, adopted, accepted, redeemed, forgiven, and sealed.

If we are a child of the Father then we are truly rich.
Remember that Paul is writing this letter to the saints in Ephesus while he is a prisoner in Rome.
As believers we are blessed with every spiritual blessing
We are adopted into God's family and given rights to His inheritance as His children.
Jesus is our redeemer and bought us with a price of his shed blood.
He has revealed to us his will according to His good pleasure.
The Holy Spirit is a guarantee for us today and in the future. The Holy Spirit is also a seal and God's stamp in our lives, as God's possessions.

Hetty Green died in 1916 and lived her life as a poor pauper but was worth millions when she died. She ate cold oatmeal because she didn't want to spend the money to heat it. And, she had a son who had to have his leg amputated because she didn't want to spend the money to take him to the Doctor. She had access to millions and could have lived a life of luxury but she failed to take advantage of that which she had readily available to her. As believers, we have all of these spiritual blessings but do we really live like a child of the King?

Where: at the church in CLC room 203 (enter through double doors in the back left corner of the church – where 4k SS classes are – take elevator up to 2^nd floor)

Topic: Men’s Fraternity series “Winning at Work & Home” (http://www.mensfraternity.com/curriculum/winning.aspx ) - This is a 16 week series, which has a 45 minute video for each topic. We watch the video and then break up into smaller groups for discussion.

Other: We usually open the doors around 5:50 am and get the video started around 6:15 or so. We break up into small groups around 7:00, and are out by no later than 7:30. From Kelly Moates - Jennifer Cherry House, a friend from college, and her husband Blaine have two girls Maisie (4) and Nora (2). She is expecting their 3rd child who is due in September. They just recently learned that Maisie (4) has aplastic anemia, a condition that occurs when your body stops producing enough new blood cells. Aplastic anemia leaves you feeling fatigued and at higher risk of infections and uncontrolled bleeding. She will need to have a bone marrow transplant next month. Her sister is being tested to see if she is a match. She will be hospitalized for month at the time when the baby is due to arrive. Jennifer has requested prayer in these areas: 1) that Nora is a perfect match 2) that Maisie stays well and injury free over the next month 3) physical & mental strength for she and Blaine 4) the new baby to come in the next 4 weeks and also needs to be a match. She appreciates your prayers and so do I!

We missed several of you this Sunday. I suppose many are trying to get that last minute vacation in before school starts. For those of you who were out, you missed seeing our newest little guy's appearance in Sunday School. Christian Shirley honored us with his adorable little presence! To celebrate with the Shirleys, Dennis & Ann Hill are opening up there home.

We also commissioned Scotty and Kelly Moates to their new teaching position in the youth department. They will surely be missed on Sundays, but we will be sure to keep them covered in prayer and enjoy seeing them at our get-togethers! We are also looking forward to some of our members returning to our class from being out for a year in service. Don't forget that August 15th kid's Sunday School classes will promote.

Somehow the Sunday School lesson moved us to speaking in bumper sticker lingo, but one of my favorite quotes (that Mike didn't need help on) was "When you are up to your armpits in alligators it's hard to remember you came to drain the swamp."

Life is tough sometimes, but when the going gets tough the tough gets going. We learned from Paul that because of our hope in Christ we can stand firm and not lose heart! 2 Corinthians brought us a good 4 point outline:

How Not to Lose Heart

I. Rely on God (3:1-6)

II. Stand by the Gospel (4:1-7)

III. Concentrate on the Eternal (4:15-18)

IV. Anticipate the Future (5:6-10)

-Elizabeth-praise and thanking God for strength during last week and for new friends

-Brenda-her brother-in-law Jim returns to the doctor for tests on 8/23 and gets results on 8/24

-Haley James-brother Sam Compton will have colon surgery this week at Brookwood to remove his entire large intestine.

-Krista Doss-Her friend's baby son Jay, whom we've prayed for before, is now at St. Jude's Hospital for the cancerous tumors behind his eyes. More tumors in that location were found recently, and St. Jude's is a better fit for him than Children's Hospital here.

-School starts this week. Please be praying for all of our kids and teachers. --And all of us mom's that are sending little ones to Kindergarten for the first time.

What scripture comes to mind when you are interested

in reading about love?

1 Corinthians 13 of course!

¹If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. ²If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. ³If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

⁴Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. ⁵It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. ⁶Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. ⁷It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Keith & Krista - A friend's 9 month old baby, Jay Duncan is undergoing chemo for cancer in his eye. They are thankful that the cancer was detected early. Pray for him as he will be having surgery soon. Pray also for Keith & Krista as they leave for Maui for safe travels & peace in leaving the girls with grandparents.
Mike & Brenda - Pray for Brenda's mother who was admitted to the hospital. UPDATE: She was released on Monday with a medication change. Continue to pray for her strength to rebuild.

You are Gifted!

All Christians have been given spiritual gifts, why?

"to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up." Ephesians 4:12

^{Spiritual gifts are different than a talent or skill....}

Spiritual Gift - a talent that God gives you to work our His will; a supernatural ability given by grace, empowering believers for service & displaying the presence of God in our lives

Talent - natural or inate ability due to physical, psychological, or emotional make-up

Skill - a learned action or an application of our spiritual gifts

In our diversity of giftedness, we must be unified to bring glory to Christ. Here's an example of how gifts can be diverse, but honor God and make His work complete...

Let's say a woman in the community is bed ridden for a month & her Christian neighbors reach our to her using their spiritual gifts. Although this example doesn't include all gifts, it might look something like this:

The perceiver would pray & intercede for her.

The server would take a meal, clean the house, & run errands for her.

The teacher would research the illness & find a book for her.

The exhorter would share scripture to encourage her, send cards, & comment on her strength.

The giver would help pay her bills, bring food, & give reports to other friends.

The administrator would organize others to bring food & care.

The one with compassion would pray for physical needs, hug & hold, be a shoulder to cry on.

The Trussville Freedom Celebration was a huge success!

It was a great representation of our church to the community!

There was one man who was new to town with his family. At our inflatable, he asked our volunteers about FBCT and his plans to visit as a result of the Celebration! I am sure there were others too.

Thanks to all who volunteered on the Noah's Ark Inflatable!

The kids loved it!!

As we were walking up to the inflatable, my niece Hannah Grace looked at me & said,"My Uncle works that?! Wow!"

She was so excited that her uncle was a "cool guy" for the moment.

Gray areas

Choices are not always black & white. You may find there are times when we ask the wrong questions with the wrong motives to decided if a behavior or attitude in a "gray area" is ok for us. It is easy to ask the questions that give you the answers you want to hear.
We are reminded in 1 Corinthians 6:12 : "Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything.

Here are some questions to ask that will lead you to more healthy answer...

Love Principle: Does the action show love for God?
Harm Principle: Will the action cause someone to stumble?
Evangelism Principle: Does the action point to Jesus?
Glory Principle: Does the action glorify God?

We do not want our choices to be a stumbling block to immature believers. Nor do we want to follow legalistic rules. We must honor God with our choices by finding a balance between these.
We can ask the right questions & pray for pure motivations to our actions.

Prayer Requests

Christy - Christy's 3 yr old cousin, Halen Hendrix fell & hit his head fracturing his skull. Pray for his recovery.
Scott & Lisa - Continue to pray for their house to sell quickly they are trying to move before Ryan starts school in August.
Mike & Calista - Calista continues to struggle with back pain. Surgery will probably be recommended...please pray! Also pray for Calista's mother, Betty Bridges who has an skin infection & is on bed rest.
Willaim & Elizabeth - William's mom, Peggy Lewis is having surgery on July 12th.
Vesla - Nick & Tanya Traylor loast their 5 month old son Brandon. Please pray for them as they cope with their loss.

Scott & Kelley - PRAISE! Scott & Kelley are in the process of adopting a baby boy! Pray for this process & baby Christian! More information to follow...
Keith & Krista - Praise! Kyndal did great after her eye surgery.
Michael & Emily - Pray for Emily's Aunt Diane who has lung cancer. Pray also for her cousin who is going through a divorce.
Jammy & Leah - Praise! Leah was able to keep her job through the recent company changes. Pray for her former manager Lisa Humes who lost her job & her mother suddenly
Mike & Brenda - Pray for Brenda's mother who is having blood pressure & energy issues. Praise! Thanks everyone for praying for Brenda's brother-in-law Jim. He received a wonderful report from the doctor - blood work great, post-op check-up fabulous, etc. He will have a CT scan in Aug. He can resume normal activities gradually!
Greg & Andrea - Andrea's friend Jenny Nelson lost her husband to cancer. Pray for her, her children, & family.
Shannon & Christy - Pray for Christy's brother David Englebert. He is scheduled to come home to Tuscon, AZ from Afghanistan in July. Pray for safe travels for he & his mother who will be traveling to see him.
Ashley & Jennifer - Pray for Jennifer's dad who is having an arteriogram on Monday for heart problems.
Brady & Julie - Pray for Julie's younger brother & his wife who are having fertility issues. Pray also for Julie's co-worker who broke her back in 2 places.

Annoucements

We will be having a baby shower for Angela Gwin on Thursday, July 22nd, 6:30pm @ Kelly Moates' house. Baby Annie Kate is expected to arrive in August!!

At the Trussville Freedom Celebration, we will be in charge of the Noah's Ark Inflatable.

Below is the schedule. One person will be needed at the entrance, one at the exit, and one or two inside the inflatable. Please check-in at the Volunteer tent with Stan or Sherrie Forehand for your Volunteer Lanyard. The picture and safety information is posted below. You may come by the church office Friday 8am-4pm to pick up your T-shirt. (They are new navy shirts this year.) Or the shirts will be available Sunday morning. Please make sure someone is there to cover your area before you leave. Return your lanyard to the Volunteer tent when you are finished.

Helpful Hints:

Feel free to run this obstacle course yourself to get familiar with it.
Preschoolers (5 yrs old & younger) are allowed on this inflatable. Parents are also welcomed.
Have children take off shoes & place them in an orderly way near the inflatable.
You monitor the number of people that appears comfortable for this inflatable.
If there is a wait, allow a group of people in for 5 minutes & then dismiss them to allow the next group.
You may remove a child for dangerous horseplay.
Let FBCT staff members know if there is a problem.
Return your lanyard to the Information Desk when you are finished.

¹It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: A man has his father's wife. ²And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this?

⁹I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— ¹⁰not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. ¹¹But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

¹⁸Flee from sexual immorality. Prayer Requests & Praises

Kelly & Scotty - PRAISE...They are so glad to be back at church in several weeks! PRAISE...Kelly reported on an awesome experience on the HS mission trip to Dallas. PRAISE...They have a new niece, Emma Kate Dorr. Kelly's Great Uncle Hal Summers passed away with the funeral this week. Please pray for the family as they accept the loss.
Clista - Clista is having back problems again & may be facing surgery.
Andrea - David Nelson was diagnosed with cancer 3 months ago. The chemo treatments are not effective. Please pray for David, Jenny, Ethan, Braden, & "baby on the way" as they have been told there are no other treatments available to target the cancer.
Emily - Pray for wisdom for Emily's mother who is caring for her 2 elderly aunts. Also continue to pray for Emily's Aunt Diane who has lung cancer as well as her son & daughter whose relationship is struggling during this time.
Mike & Amy - Pray for traveling mercies as they go to SC, then the beach & back over the next couple of weeks.
Keith & Krista - Kyndall is having eye surgery Wednesday at Children's South.
Brenda - Jim's tests on 6/23 & a doctor's appt to follow on 6/24 for results.
Jason & Ashley - Carter is having a tonsillectomy on July 1st.
